Welcome to DemoLinux
3.0
The DemoLinux CD allow to use Linux without installation, disk
partitioning or any other complex manipulation that still prevent
many people from giving Linux a try. This CD does not install Linux on
your hard disk, but it allows you to play with it at lenght before you
eventually decide to proceed with a full fledged
installation.
This is made possible by a set of technical features in the Linux
kernel and by some other free software (notably from S.u.S.E. and
RedHat) that we use here.
DemoLinux provides a full Linux workstation environment with KDE
2,2,2 desktop, Netscape, Star Office 5.2 and the GIMP.
As DemoLinux boots it goes through various hardware detection
phases and will try and identify your system's
network card, sound card and so on. Sometimes it will ask you for
information, such as the language environment to use and which keymap
to install. When the boot process is finished, you'll see the log in
screen. Select the user 'demo' and hit 'Go' to load the desktop.
By default DemoLinux runs from a ram disk loaded from the CD and it
uses no swap file. You can set up a swap file and allocate some
permanent filesystem space for DemoLinux to use on one of your hard
drive partitions. Click the 'Anchor' icon on your Desktop and follow
the on-screen prompts to set this up. By allocating some filesystem
space in this way, you;ll able to store data permanently and to
install extra software should you need to.
