YaST2: installation made easy
The YaST2 installation and configuration tool found
in SuSE`s previous release quickly became a desktop user`s best
friend. Now it`s even better, thanks to simplified re-installation and
uninstallation of single packages, as well as an NIS client module and
a new graphical inetd.conf editor, which allows you to install server
capabilities separately from the clients.
SuSE BLinux for Visually Impaired Customers
SuSE Linux 8.0 is the first
Linux distribution to support installation and applications in
Braille. The new screen reader Blinux is a daemon that runs in the
background to enable partially sighted and blind users to work
comfortably in a Linux environment. This program provides unrestricted
use of all applications, allows users to compile their own Linux
kernel, and does not compromise system security in any way.
Hardware support
SuSE Linux 8.0 now supports
brand new graphic chips, including ATI, NVidia, and Matrox. Diamond
Fire GL 1 -- a SuSE exclusive -- is supported, as well. XFree86TM 4.0
also features support for scanners on parallel ports, Adaptec RAID
controllers, Symbios Logic sym53c1010 SCSI U160 controllers, and EIDE
ATA/100 controllers.
With Linux 8.0, SuSE has made
a series of improvements to the Linux kernel that could (unofficially)
be called 2.4, thanks to a variety of
extensions. Extended USB support now addresses modems, printers,
keyboards, and mice, along with experimental drivers for ISDN, floppy,
and Iomega Zip 250 drives. Another new addition is support for
SCSI-based scanners on parallel ports and Adaptec RAID controllers.
With further development of the ATA standard -- now 100 MHZ -- EIDE
controllers reach previously unattanable SCSI performance.
Loud and clear from ALSA laboratories: SuSE Linux 8.0
is the first distribution to provide a hardware plug and play driver
for all Yamaha (compatible) sound cards with YMF72x and YMF74x chips.
